Why Feed Suet All Year Round?

Suet is one of the most useful foods you can put out for garden birds, and it is worth offering in every season, not just when the weather turns cold.

• Spring – Parent birds are busy building nests and feeding hungry chicks, so a reliable energy source nearby saves them time and effort.
• Summer – Fledglings are learning to feed themselves and adult birds are moulting and growing new feathers, which takes a lot of energy.
• Autumn – Birds need to build up their fat reserves before winter as insects and other natural food start to disappear.
• Winter – This is when suet matters most, as days are short, nights are long and cold, and natural food is hard to find.

Why Suet Is So Important in Winter

Small birds such as blue tits can lose up to 10% of their body weight on a single cold night just keeping warm. With only a few hours of daylight to find enough food, a high-fat food like suet helps them rebuild their reserves quickly and make it through to the next morning.

When the ground is frozen and hedgerows are bare, garden feeders become a lifeline. Once birds learn that your garden is a reliable source of food they will keep coming back, so try to keep your feeders topped up regularly throughout the year.
