This Mint Never Hinged (MNH) souvenir sheet, cataloged as Scott 3611, was issued by the USPS on April 26, 2002, in Tallahassee, Florida. As the fourth installment in the educational "Nature of America" series, this issue illustrates the beauty and ecological complexity of the longleaf pine forest ecosystem, which historically spanned the coastal plains from Virginia to Texas. Design and Layout: The sheet features a sweeping, realistic mural by artist John D. Dawson. Ten individual 34c stamps are seamlessly integrated into the artwork, with a total face value of $3.40. The "Forest Built by Fire": The back of the sheet provides a detailed narrative explaining how the longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) evolved with adaptations to survive frequent, low-intensity fires that clear the ground for seedlings and support a diverse range of species. It features a "© 2001 USPS" copyright notice and a descriptive diagram on the reverse to help collectors identify each of the 27 featured species. depicted region. The rear of sheet has a brief descriptive text of the
stamp images, accompanied with a graphic outline of the stamp images.
