Artist's Biography:

Louis Toffoli was a French modernist artist, best known for his colorful, fractural figural and landscape paintings and for his characteristic post-cubist transparent paintings.
Toffoli's work is concerned with transparency, often breaking his faceless figures down into various overlapping parts to facilitate a ghostly, dream-like appearance that addresses the transitory quality of life.
Born on October 16, 1907, in Trieste, Italy, the artist spent his early life in World War II-era Italy, which had a marked impact on his work and outlook.
A twentieth century French painter and printmaker, Louis Toffoli studied art at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Trieste in 1924.
He began producing Constructivist paintings and exhibited several of these early works at the 1928 Trieste Biennale, which subsequently garnered attention from the Fascist regime: he was promptly condemned by Mussolini's fascist regime. Fearing for his safety, Toffoli fled to Paris, where he attained significant popularity in artistic and intellectual circles, and regularly exhibited at the Salon d'Automne and the Salon des Independants.
With the outbreak of the Second World War (1939-1945) Louis Toffoli sought refuge in the countryside of Touraine and worked for the French Resistance. After the war he returned to Paris and received his French citizenship in 1947. Today the fine art of Louis Toffoli is included in public galleries in Germany, Holland, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Sweden, America and Israel. The largest collection of his art is located at Le Musee Toffoli, Charenton-le-Pont (near Paris).
After his death in Paris, France on February 18, 1999, he was awarded the Knight of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic in 1996.

Louis Toffoli, a French painter and lithographer born in Trieste (Austrian Coast), October 16, 1907, to an Italian father and a Slovenian mother, and died February 18, 1999 in Créteil, France.
Successively Austro-Hungarian, then Italian and French, Toffoli declared himself as "from Trieste" and signed his paintings neither Luigi nor Louis, but only Toffoli.

Biography

Art-loving Triestine

On May 20, 1915, Italy declared war on Austria-Hungary. Trieste is an Austro-Hungarian port on the Adriatic and the family is forced into exile in Italy. He is eight. In Padua, then in Florence, Luigi discovers arts of religious or profane inspiration.

In 1924, Luigi Toffoli entered the Naval Academy of Trieste, but difficulties forced him to give up his studies. He worked as a blacksmith then a tailor and took evening classes at the Trieste Academy of Fine Arts. At the Trieste Biennale in 1928, among Chirico and other well-known artists, Luigi Toffoli presented two canvases in the constructivist style. Those responsible for fascist propaganda take a close interest in the singular vision of the young artist. The Black Shirts urge him to join them. He must organize his escape (at the time of the fascist, totalitarian regime, it was forbidden for Italian nationals to leave the national territory).

Installation in France

In 1930, Luigi Toffoli took the opportunity of an organized trip to emigrate to Paris. Without proper papers or money, he lives in the Goutte d'Or district, rue Myrha, where his future wife Sylvia, who died in 1973, joins him. They will have two sons Patrick and Claude. They live by their wits until Denis Kalman, a renowned fashion designer from Faubourg Saint-Honoré, hires him in his studio. His situation is regularized, his talents as a model maker are recognized. He obtained a tradesman's card and taught the art of cutting at the Chambre Syndicale du Garment.

His reputation grew in 1934; many orders allow him to settle in Alfortville then in Charenton-le-Pont. He became an independent craftsman for Parisian fashion houses. He again took drawing lessons, patiently experimenting with his style and trying his hand at the poster technique.

Prizes and first painting exhibitions

In 1935, a competition was opened by the Ministry of the Colonies on the occasion of the tercentenary of the attachment of the Antilles to France. His composition won first prize. Shortly after, Luigi Toffoli received second prize in an international competition organized by the League of Nations. It is also the time of the first exhibitions in the main salons: Salon d'Automne, Salon des Indépendants, Salon des Painters Witnesses of their Time, Musée de la Marine...

The economic crisis of 1936, public scandals and strikes lead the Popular Front to the government. He sometimes attends political meetings where he portrays Blum, Taittinger, Auriol and other figures of the time.

During the occupation, in order to escape the Compulsory Labor Service, Luigi Toffoli took refuge in Touraine, in Jaulnay, where he worked as a liaison officer for the Resistance. He now presents himself as a painter.

He exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants paintings inspired by the world of work, one of the strong themes of his work. In 1947, Luigi Toffoli obtained French naturalization and became Louis Toffoli.

Exhibitions in galleries

The RG gallery in Paris organized in 1952 for Louis Toffoli his first personal exhibition. From now on, exhibitions and trips abroad will multiply. In 1954, Louis Toffoli learned the technique of lithography in the workshops of Fernand Mourlot, then from 1968, he continued his editions of lithographs in those of Jean-Claude Perrin. Lithography will popularize his painting.

These are also the years when he exhibited at the Suillerot gallery alongside Maurice Boitel, Robert Savary, Noe Canjura, Daniel du Janerand, Ginette Rapp and Eliane Thiollier. Several photographs from February 1955 by Georges Papo represent them surrounding the gallerist Raymond Suillerot.

In 1956, he explored Spain and then Yugoslavia by train and bicycle, off the tourist trails, and sketched the people of the country, in search of humanity. Back in Charenton-le-Pont, he once again exhibited at the Salon of Painters Witnesses of their Time. His talent was noticed by a Brazilian patron in 1960 who invited him to exhibit at the Copacabana Palace in Brazil.

Travel and fame

Louis Toffoli then devoted himself entirely to painting and travel. Israel, the United States, Mexico, China… and many other countries of which he will paint a work always revitalized at the heart of daily life. Aubusson weaves in 1976 the first tapestries of the painter.

From this date Louis Toffoli devoted himself exclusively to painting. 2 stamps are published by La Poste, according to his works, in 1980 (La Broderie)3 and 1982 (La Ferronnerie). Many private exhibitions are organized around the world. Several films and TV shows are made around his work.

The Toffoli museum was inaugurated in 1995 in Charenton-le-Pont. Louis Toffoli donated a hundred works to the city. The museum was closed in 2002, replaced by the municipal gallery Art et Liberté.

A number of museums, particularly in Germany, Brazil, Spain, Holland, Israel, Italy, Morocco, Portugal, Sweden, the United States, have works by the painter. Many books are devoted to him.

Honors

• 1987: Knight in the National Order of the Legion of Honour, decorated at the Paris City Hall by Jacques Chirac, Prime Minister8.

• 1996: Knight of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic.

Work

Toffoli's canvases immediately impose themselves on the visitor, the light is transparent crossing all the forms, it seems to come out of the paintings and the impression of purity that emanates from them creates a deep intimacy with the characters. Louis Toffoli would be in search of an unusual inner truth, the colors and the lights vibrating in his paintings make the patterns of the canvas sing and delight the spectators.

Louis Toffoli uses only one technique for his painted works: crayon. The subjects are therefore often found on oilcloths, the light showing through differently depending on the support. Louis Toffoli devotes a period of his work to work on light in lithography. He also dedicates a work to the work of the lithographer with La Presse à bras.
