River salt bush

(Atriplex amnicola)

A hardy species, well adapted to dry and drought and highly saline conditions, but will

grow well in any area. A small compact bush with beautiful silvery grey leaves.

An excellent species for use as a bush tucker species, windbreak, stock shade,

hedge, soil stabiliser, erosion control and cattle/sheep fodder equal to Tagasaste (Tree

Lucerne) which is also another excellent drought tolerant plant and a valuable source of

protein fodder.

These two species should be grown together to compliment one another.

Stock fodder

Leaves are high in Vitamin E and are reported to add flavour to stock which graze on its

foliage. Stock develop leaner meat that is more hydrated which serves to improve meat

colour and extends its shelf life.

Bush tucker

A very useful plant, it may be used as a bush tucker spice as the leaves are naturally

salty. The leaves may be dried or used fresh.
