Don is also fondly remembered by fans of Bristol Rovers as the manager who went twenty seven games unbeaten as he guided the team to the Second Division for the first time in over a decade, playing exciting and direct football. He took large strides to modernise the club before he became the first English manager to leave a team to manage in the North American Soccer League with the Portland Timbers, where he battled against the stars of the New York Cosmos.
