Some believe that the fictional astronaut featured in this card series, Captain Tom, was the inspiration for David Bowie's alter ego Major Tom in his first major hit single, Space Oddity. The author Nicholas Pegg mentions the possibility in his latest edition of The Complete David Bowie (NOT INCLUDED IN THIS SALE): "As for the name of Bowie's existential spaceman, it may or may not be a coincidence that a set of "Moon Mission" collecting cards issued with Mister Softee ice cream in 1962, when David was fifteen, centred on an astronaut called Captain Tom".
