Antique Victorian Pinchbeck brooch

Fabulous handmade Pinchbeck brooch with original silk leather lined box for T R Russell Liverpool. Simple engraved detailing with flower forms, and simple hook back clasp- very usable.

Pinchbeck is a form of brass, an alloy of copper and zinc, mixed so it closely resembles gold. It was invented by Christopher Pinchbeck, a London clock and watchmaker in the early 1800s. At the time gold was only sold in 18-carat quality, so pinchbeck allowed ordinary people to buy gold 'effect' jewellery.

Pinchbeck fell out of use in the second half of the 19th century, being replaced by low carat gold which was legalised in 1854, so most Pinchbeck pieces are from the 1800s- So ours is an Antique brooch.

A handmade old piece and there is some slight wear to surfaces, but this makes it individual- we only have one!

A fabulously unusual vintage piece- and extra special as it comes in it's original leather box- great gift for lovers of Vintage Antique jewellery and Liverpudlians too!
