                            Marcel Mouly (1918 - Jan 7, 2008)

Early Life

Mouly was Born in Paris in 1918.

He did not start out as an artist.

He was a beach vendor, dental technician, and cellar man before pursuing a career of painting.

In 1942, Mouly was arrested by the Germans for being mistaken as a spy. He was placed in solitary confinement for one year. It was through this confinement that he decided to pursue art.

In 1943, he made friends with Pignon and was given his first exhibition of two paintings at the Salon d'Automne in Paris.

He befriended Jacques Lipchitz, a great sculptor, and was influenced by his work on cubism. Often used lithograph as medium.

Career

His career took shape after the exhibit and Mouly grew of more importance. He met and was taught by many famous artists such as Fernand Leger.

He is influenced by Braqque, Matisse, and Picasso the most. Matisse influenced Mouly in the Fauvist use of color that is apparent in all Mouly's paintings.

1935, after studying painting at the French Academies, Marcel began to display his work publicly.

His first public one person show was in 1949 at the Libraire Bergamasque in Paris.

Style

Mouly uses bright unauthentic colors to create a painting that is calm and soothing to the eye. He uses strong confident strokes in a semi abstract style.

His style is unique and easily recognizable.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    Mouly's background composition is derived from analytic and synthetic cubism.

Fame and Honors

Mouly's work is exhibited in museums such as the Musee Nationale d'art Modern in the Centre Georges Pompidou and the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris, Musee de Geneve in Switzerland, the SFMOMA in San Francisco, and numerous other museums, more than 20 around the world.

He received two of France's highest art awards : the Chevalier de L'Ordre des Arts et Lettres in 1957 and the Premier PRix de Lithographie in 1973.

In the art world, he is relatively new and his works are worth in the thousands range. Marcel Mouly was considered one of the best contemporary artists in the century.
