Billingsgate, London — Original Antique Hand-Coloured Steel Engraving with Decorative Maritime Border, c.1830s–1840s

A particularly attractive original 19th-century hand-coloured steel engraving entitled Billingsgate, depicting the bustling harbour and historic fish market on the River Thames in London.

Dating from approximately the 1830s–1840s, the engraving was drawn by Frederick Calvert and engraved by J. Carter, with publication details for Tombleson & Co., 11 Paternoster Row, London, and Creuzbauer & Co., Carlsruhe (Karlsruhe), Germany.

Unlike many conventional topographical engravings of the period, this example features a beautifully elaborate decorative maritime surround, with fishing nets, oars, ropes, fish and nautical equipment framing the central picture.

The print also has a distinctive embossed rectangular border, giving the entire composition a particularly handsome presentation.

The central scene captures the extraordinary bustle of Billingsgate, then one of London's most important centres for the fish trade.

The harbour is crowded with sailing boats and merchant vessels, their masts, rigging and overlapping sails forming a fascinating network above the water.

In the foreground, fishermen, boatmen and traders work among the smaller craft, while the imposing waterfront buildings provide a wonderful backdrop to the busy commercial activity.

The delicate hand colouring enhances the blue-grey water, sails, boats and riverside architecture, while the finely engraved decorative border adds considerable visual interest.

Billingsgate Fish Market was one of London's most famous historic markets, with a long association with the River Thames and the capital's maritime trade. During the 19th century, the market was a thriving centre for the landing and sale of fish brought into London by boat.

This engraving provides a fascinating record of Billingsgate before the later Victorian redevelopment of the market buildings and waterfront.

A particularly appealing antique print for collectors of London history, River Thames scenes, maritime art, fishing heritage, Victorian engravings and decorative 19th-century prints.
