In Christian theology, the three angels symbolize the hypostases of God, which are perceived as inseparable, yet not fused—as the consubstantial Holy Trinity.

The Lord appeared to him in the oak grove of Mamre, as he sat at the entrance of the tabernacle on a hot day. And lifting up his eyes, he saw three men standing opposite him. When he saw them, he ran toward them from the entrance of the tabernacle, bowed himself to the ground, and said, "Master, if I have found favor in Your sight, do not pass by Your servant. And they shall bring water and wash your feet. And you shall rest under this tree, and I will bring bread, and strengthen your hearts. And now, when you pass by your servant... Then he took butter and milk and the young bullock prepared and set them before them, and he stood beside them under the tree. And they ate.
