Another fascinating historical illustration, and a natural companion to the previous View of Windsor Castle in 1530.

This one is particularly interesting because it combines an illustrated landscape with a map, identifying places associated with the Tudor period and the story of Herne the Hunter.

Title: Windsor Great Park, 1529 Artist: W. Alfred Delamotte, apparently initialled W.A.D. (del. — drawn by). Date: Probably early 1840s, associated with William Harrison Ainsworth's Windsor Castle. The date 1529 refers to the period depicted, not the printing date. Image size: Approximately 187 × 104 mm, according to your index. Technique: Monochrome printed illustration; precise printing process not confirmed.

What makes it interesting

The illustration shows Windsor Castle at the left, with an elaborate bird's-eye representation of Windsor Great Park extending towards the Great Lake.

Various locations are labelled, including Herne's Oak, Herne's Chase, the marshes and other landmarks associated with the novel. It's an unusual combination of literary illustration, Tudor history and historical cartography.

Condition

Generally good for its age, with clear, fine detail and generous margins. Some light discolouration and minor edge wear are visible, particularly along the upper edge, which has small irregularities consistent with removal from a book.
