This is an interesting change from the Cruikshank illustrations. Rather than a dramatic episode from the novel, we have a detailed architectural reconstruction of Windsor Castle as it was believed to have appeared during Henry VIII's reign.

Artist: W. Alfred Delamotte (1814–1883), credited del. (drawn by). Source: Probably William Harrison Ainsworth's Windsor Castle, early 1840s. Image size: Approximately 178 × 116 mm. Colour: Monochrome.

Description

A bird's-eye reconstruction of Windsor Castle in 1530, showing the extensive medieval fortifications, towers, courtyards and surrounding landscape.

The illustration includes a decorative title cartouche and a detailed printed key identifying features such as the Upper, Middle and Lower Wards, Round Tower, St George's Chapel and various gateways and towers.

The architectural and historical interest gives this print appeal beyond collectors of the novel itself.

Condition

The illustration appears clean, with crisp architectural detail and generous margins. There is some light age-related toning and minor edge wear.
