The 65th Separate Mechanized Brigade "The Great Meadow" was established in April 2022 as part of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Since June 2022, its soldiers have been continuously carrying out combat missions on the Zaporizhzhia front. They notably participated in the liberation of Robotyne during the Ukrainian counteroffensive of 2023 and subsequently defended the Robotyne salient.
On December 20, 2024, the brigade was awarded the honorary title "The Great Meadow" (Velykyi Luh), in tribute to a historic region along the lower Dnipro River, considered the cradle of the Zaporizhzhian Cossacks.
Historically, the Ukrainian word luh did not simply refer to an open grassy meadow, but rather to a wooded floodplain along a river. For the Zaporizhzhian Cossacks, the Great Meadow symbolized freedom, strength, and a natural sanctuary.
This Cossack heritage is reflected in the brigade's insignia. Its emblem depicts a Cossack armed with a musket and spear, a traditional symbol of the Zaporizhzhian Host.
The Latin inscription Pratum Magnum, meaning "The Great Meadow", highlights the connection between today's Ukrainian defenders and the centuries-old military traditions of southern Ukraine.
