Japanese Karatsu Pottery Bottle Vase Brown White Glaze Antique Japan Stoneware

Description and Item Information
Up for sale is this old Japanese Karatsu pottery bottle vase. Please excuse any glare in the photos. This handsome stoneware piece has a rounded bottle form with a narrow neck. The body is covered in a glossy dark brown glaze, while the neck and upper area have a contrasting pale cream to white glaze. Throwing rings are visible on the exterior. The vase measures approximately 11 3/8 inches tall and about 6 1/4 inches in maximum diameter. Unpacked, it weighs 2 pounds 15.7 ounces. This piece would make an attractive addition to a collection of Japanese ceramics or Karatsu pottery.

Identification
This unsigned Japanese stoneware bottle is attributed to the Karatsu tradition. The exact maker and age are not known. The form, glaze, construction, firing characteristics, and age-related wear are consistent with older Karatsu ware, possibly dating to the Edo period.

Condition
The vase displays well overall but shows age and use. There is crazing to both the dark and pale glazed areas; staining in the pale glaze makes some craze lines appear more pronounced. One approximately 1/2 inch long hairline at the neck, with a tiny glaze flake along it (Photo 6), appears to be a crack, although it is not clearly visible from the interior and may not go all the way through the clay. The exterior has fine scratches. As made, there are glaze indents, pits, and small glaze skips. A raised 3/16 by 1/4 inch area of disrupted glaze appears to be a firing flaw or kiln kiss rather than a later chip (Photo 9). A small smooth, raised flaw is present on the side (Photo 10). There is excess glaze at the base and a small chip to the inner foot ring where glaze apparently adhered to the kiln during firing (Photo 8), along with a few other very small flakes around the foot edges. Please review the description and photos and ask any necessary questions prior to bidding or buying.
