For sale is a wonderful
antique carved wood folk art match holder(?) in the shape of a shoe with a baby
alligator poking out. The piece is 4 5/8
inches long by 1 1/2 inches wide by about 2 3/8 inches tall. It is carved in the form of an old high
button shoe, likely out of sycamore or beech wood and painted or stained
black. It has the head of a baby
alligator poking out of the toe, with the tail coming out of the top and along
one side. There are pin holes at the
back of the top where a lid was originally attached. There are no visible marks.
Condition on the piece is as
found. The lid is missing, as noted, There
are some small wood chips at the toe around the alligator head, and the head may have been dressed up at some point with additional staining. There are also some
dents to the heel surface, where it looks like it was used as a tack hammer at
some point. Regardless, a really great
piece of folk art!
