Lot of two original 1940s Culver Lures Company fly-fishing and fly-tying publications from St. Louis, Missouri.
Included are:
1. Culver Lures Co. Rod Building Supplies / Fly Tying Supplies 1945-46 Catalog
Original illustrated mail-order catalog from Culver Lures Co., 1847 S. 14th Street, St. Louis, Missouri. Filled with period fishing tackle, fly-tying and rod-building supplies, including hooks, feathers, chenille, silk floss, rod winding silk, varnish, ferrule cement and numerous other supplies.
One of the best pages is the large illustrated “Tie Your Own Flies!” section showing dozens of period artificial fly patterns.
The catalog also contains interesting WWII-era material, including the “Keep ’Em Flying – Buy War Savings Stamps and Bonds Now!” advertising message.
2. The New Dictionary of Fly Patterns – Revised Edition
Compiled by H. R. Sims, copyright 1944, and published by Culver Lures Company.
Contains an extensive alphabetical dictionary of traditional fly patterns with recipes identifying bodies, tails, wings, hackles, ribbing and other tying materials. Also includes illustrations of hooks, hackles and fly-tying materials.
This copy is particularly interesting because a previous owner added extensive handwritten period fly-tying notes and recipes throughout several pages, including color combinations, material substitutions and pattern information. These give the book the appearance of having actually been used by a serious mid-century fly tier rather than simply stored away.
Condition: Both are original vintage publications showing age and use. Expect toning, handling wear, edge/corner wear, small marks, creasing and other age-related wear. The Dictionary of Fly Patterns contains extensive handwritten notes and annotations from a previous owner. Please examine photographs carefully for exact condition.
Sold together as an original 1940s American fly-fishing / fly-tying ephemera lot. — not reproductions.
