Antique shadow box diorama .. a 3-D "perspective decoupage" built into the lid of a functional spool or ribbon box. Featuring a cut-out of a Regency style lady ("Evening Dress" from June 1816 published in Ackermann's Repository of Arts, a prominent British periodical of the era). She wears a high-waisted Empire gown with a deep flounce trimmed with a garland of pink flowers, carries a scarf and wears roses in her hair. She stands in an elegantly appointed room, with marbled columns, gilt candelabra set on a marbled table with gilt swan base, gilt stool, and scalloped drapery at the top. Under glass. The box opens to reveal (6) slender dowels on a slight ledge; light marbled paper cover throughout. The outside of the box is embellished with decorative papers and trim. Four small brass "ball" feet. Apx 10" X 6 1/2" and 4 7/8" high. Attributed to Narcissa Niblack Thorne. The artist's creations, which are highly collectible, range from this example of functional table-top decoupage art to her legendary, exquisitely furnished miniature architectural rooms. As found ~ please note the paper trims show minor wear, consistent with age; otherwise very good, all original condition.
