Pair of antique miniature Italian Neoclassical chromos, mounted inside shadowbox frames:

* "L'Aurora" (The Dawn), a reproduction of a famous 17th century Baroque ceiling fresco by Guido Reni, originally painted for the Casino dell'Aurora at Palazzo Pallavicini-Rospigliosi in Rome. It depicts Apollo, the god of the Sun, riding across the sky in a golden chariot drawn by horses. He is surrounded by a ring of female figures representing the Hours (Horae). Flying above the horses is a winged cherub (Cupid) holding a torch. Gliding ahead of the entire procession is Aurora (the goddess of Dawn), scattering flowers to chase away the darkness and herald the rising sun.

* "The Dance of Apollo and the Muses", a reproduction of a famous High Renaissance artwork commonly attributed to Baldassarre Peruzzi (and occasionally Giulio Romano), with the original oil on panel hanging in the Palazzo Pitti in Florence. The image presents a continuous, frieze-like procession of ten classical figures holding hands and dancing in a ring against a shimmering gold background. At the center of the chain is Apollo, accompanied by Nine Muses ~ the patron goddesses of literature, science, and the arts.

Presented in Rococo gilt ormolu frames, with outer frames of ebonized wood; lush gilt sloped sides, under glass.  The outside dimensions are apx 8 7/8" X 6 1/8"; the area under glass is apx 7 5/8" X 5 1/8"; the image area of the chromo is apx 4 3/4" X 2 1/2". Minor surface wear to the outer frames, otherwise both are very good, all original condition. Enlarge photos for detail.
