The LZ-129 Hindenburg was the lead ship of the Hindenburg class and the largest rigid airship ever constructed. Entering service in 1936, it was designed for commercial transatlantic passenger flights, operating primarily between Frankfurt, Germany, and the naval air station at Lakehurst, New Jersey. The luxurious airship completed multiple successful crossings, drastically reducing travel time compared to ocean liners. However, its brief career ended tragically on May 6, 1937, when it caught fire and was destroyed while docking at Lakehurst, an event that effectively brought the era of passenger airships to a close.
