The LZ 129 Hindenburg was a commercial passenger zeppelin and the lead ship of the Hindenburg class. On May 3, 1937, it departed Frankfurt, Germany, for what was intended to be the first of 18 scheduled transatlantic flights to the United States that season. Three days later, on May 6, 1937, the airship caught fire and was completely destroyed while attempting to dock at Naval Air Station Lakehurst in New Jersey.
