The Final Flight of the LZ 127 Graf Zeppelin

The LZ 127 Graf Zeppelin was one of the most successful rigid airships ever built, making 590 flights and completing the first global flight by an airship in 1929. For nearly a decade, it safely carried passengers and mail across the Atlantic. However, following the tragic crash of its sister ship, the Hindenburg (LZ 129), in May 1937, public confidence in hydrogen airships collapsed, and commercial passenger zeppelin flights were immediately suspended. The LZ 127 made its final flight shortly after in 1937 before being grounded and eventually dismantled. This 1987 exhibition cover marks the 50th anniversary of that historic "Letzte Fahrt" (last flight).
