French School late 19th C. Watercolor Hussar Directoire Portrait
Dear collectors, Noblesse-Collection is pleased to propose you this fine and highly decorative
French military watercolor depicting a Hussar officer in full dress, represented standing in an
elegant and confident pose.
The officer wears the spectacular Hungarian-inspired uniform characteristic of the French Hussars:
a blue braided dolman richly decorated with yellow/gold braiding, matching blue trousers, sash,
high boots, sword and sabretache. A richly braided pelisse is dramatically worn over his left shoulder.
Particularly interesting are the officer's long side braids or “cadenettes”, a distinctive hairstyle
associated with French light cavalry during the Revolutionary period and the years around the
Directoire and Consulate.
The artist has paid considerable attention to the details of the uniform and equipment, particularly
the numerous braids and buttons of the dolman, the sash, sword fittings and decorated sabretache.
Although the uniform represented belongs stylistically to the French Revolutionary / Directoire
period, circa 1795–1800, the watercolor itself appears to be a later 19th-century historicist
work, probably dating from the second half or late 19th century.
