Handsome Civil War-era style U.S. Army Corps of Engineers headgear badge featuring the distinctive engineer castle motif surrounded by a detailed laurel wreath. The central design depicts a fortified masonry castle with three crenellated towers, recessed windows, brickwork detailing, and a prominent central arched doorway. The castle is framed by deeply modeled laurel branches tied together at the bottom, creating an impressive three-dimensional military insignia. The reverse shows the raised construction of the castle and wreath along with its wire and loop attachment fittings. Measuring approximately 3 inches across as shown, the piece displays a dark aged surface with attractive brown, bronze, blue, and reddish patination throughout. In our opinion, the form and iconography are consistent with a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers insignia associated with the Civil War period. Condition shows age-related surface wear, oxidation, patina, discoloration, minor irregularities, and wear to the attachment hardware. A visually striking piece of American military insignia with excellent engineer castle imagery. Please view all photographs carefully for measurements, construction, condition, and details.
