California Concert: The Hollywood Palladium documents a remarkable performance from July 18, 1971, when producer Creed Taylor assembled musicians from the CTI roster for an ambitious live recording in Los Angeles.
Among the participating musicians were:
Freddie Hubbard – Trumpet
Stanley Turrentine – Saxophone
George Benson – Guitar
Hubert Laws – Flute
Bob James – Keyboards
Ron Carter – Bass
Billy Cobham – Drums
Airto Moreira – Percussion
The concert represents an important period in the evolution of jazz fusion, when jazz musicians increasingly incorporated elements of funk, soul, and contemporary popular music into extended improvisational performances.
Collector's Note: This CBS Records edition carries catalog number ZK 40690 and explicitly states that the compact disc was manufactured in Japan. Its Japanese manufacturing makes the physical pressing particularly relevant to collectors who distinguish early CD production variants from later domestic editions.
The album is also notable for its four extended performances, especially the approximately 21-minute interpretation of Blues West, offering a substantial example of the collaborative improvisational style associated with the CTI label.
