The best known of all pears; 'Conference' is excellent eaten as a dessert pear but also exceptional when cooked – try them poached in red wine or baked in cakes and crumbles! The long bell-shaped fruits with firm flesh can be eaten hard and crunchy or when fully ripe and fragrant, with a smooth flavour and juicy texture. This variety crop late in the season, from October to November, and the fruit will store until January. Enjoy 'Conference' pears at their best by picking them slightly under-ripe, store them in a cool place and bring indoors to ripen slowly. Pear rootstock: Quince A - Semi vigorous reaching a mature height of up to 3m (10') to 4m (13').
This variety is partially self-fertile. For the heaviest crops it is best grown with another variety. If you only have room for one tree then make sure that a neighbour has a tree close by that can act as a suitable pollinator. Estimated time to cropping once planted: 2 years. Estimated time to best yields: 5 years.
Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.
Our patio fruit trees are small trees adapted to grow in different container sizes but you can also transplant them into the open ground if you wish. Trees are grafted onto the most innovative rootstock, which reduces the vigour of the plant, provides a controlled growth and improves the characteristics of the fruits! Eventual height 1.5-2m, depending on container size. All trees need pruning in some way and trees are very adaptable. What makes our patio range special is that they are quite happy in a pot for their lives, and naturally have an eventual height that does not exceed 2m, but they are just as happy and productive at 75cm. That is down to rootstock and the clonal selection.
Plant pear trees in any well drained soil in a sheltered sunny position. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost into the planting hole and drive the stake into the ground to support the tree. Staking after planting may result in damage to the root ball. Plant fruit trees at their original soil level and firm them into the ground. Fasten the tree to the stake using a tree tie, and water well. Pears will produce the best crops when planted near to another pear tree to increase pollination.
