Vintage RALLING EVEREST-PICKEL ice axe with a wooden shaft, made in Austria.
RALLING was an Austrian ice axe manufacturer and blacksmith based in Fulpmes, approximately 10 km south-southwest of Innsbruck.
The maker is believed to have been Felix Ralling, and the company later operated as F. Ralling Hammerwerk after World War II.
The metal head is clearly marked:
“EVEREST-PICKEL
RALLING
MADE IN AUSTRIA”
The strongly curved pick, wide adze and traditional wooden shaft give this ice axe a distinctive vintage Alpine mountaineering appearance.
A leather wrist leash is also included.
RALLING ice axes were imported into Japan after World War II and were sometimes sold under the names “Rolling” or “Fulpmes” in Japanese mountaineering catalogs and shops.
This EVEREST-PICKEL model would make an interesting collectible or display piece for enthusiasts of vintage Austrian climbing equipment, Alpine tools and Eispickel.
