Offered here is a fascinating vintage Seiko “Dancing Hands” Perpetual Calendar, reference 6M13-7039, powered by Seiko’s highly unusual 6M13 analog quartz movement.
The 6M13 is much more than a conventional quartz watch. Seiko designed the movement so that its hands perform different functions depending upon the selected operating mode—an unusual feature that has led collectors to refer to watches using this family of movements as “Dancing Hands.”
This example features a striking black dial with gold-tone case and bezel, applied hour markers, luminous hands, large date window at 3 o’clock and multiple calendar displays. Four pushers and the crown control the watch’s various functions.
The 6M13 perpetual-calendar movement provides time, calendar, one-day alarm, daily alarm and calendar-search functions. The date is displayed numerically, while the hands are used to indicate such information as the day, month and year depending upon the selected mode. According to Seiko’s instructions for caliber 6M13, the calendar automatically compensates for odd- and even-length months and leap years, and its calendar-search function covers dates from 1400 through 2499.

Cosmetically, this is an attractive vintage example showing normal signs of age and use. There is visible wear to the gold-tone case and bezel consistent with a watch of this age.
