Wada Sanzo First Edition Japanese Woodblock Otedama Kyoto Hanga-In

Original Japanese color woodblock print by celebrated artist Wada Sanzō (1883–1967), published circa 1950 by Kyoto Hanga-in.

Known as “Girls Playing Otedama,” the scene depicts four young girls playing the traditional Japanese beanbag game. One carries a sleeping infant on her back while illustrated books lie scattered across the floor.

The complete margin inscriptions identify this as a first-edition impression:

• 初版 — First Edition
• 版元 京都版画院 — Publisher: Kyoto Hanga-in
• 彫 藤川 — Carver: Fujikawa
• 摺 大野 — Printer: Ōno
• Signed 三造 — Sanzō, with the artist’s red seal

This exact composition is documented in the collections of the Minneapolis Institute of Art and St. Catherine University.

The print is attached at its corners to an older paper backing and is being left exactly as found. It has not been separated from the backing. There is age toning, corner-mounting residue and minor age-related wear. Colors remain attractive. Please examine all photographs carefully for condition.

The frame is not included. The print will be shipped unframed and still attached to its existing paper mount.
