1990 Mercedes-Benz 230E W124 Auto – 50k Miles – Huge History – Original Books
2.3 Petrol | Automatic | 4-Door Saloon | Exceptional Documented History
Offered for sale is this very well-documented 1990 Mercedes-Benz 230E Automatic, from the era when the W124 established its reputation for exceptional engineering, build quality and longevity.
What really separates this car from many surviving W124s is the amount and continuity of its accompanying history. Outstanding history file
The car is accompanied by its original Mercedes-Benz service book, original Mercedes literature/manuals and a sizeable collection of invoices and supporting paperwork.
Among the period items photographed are the original blue Mercedes-Benz United Kingdom Sales/Service booklet, European Mercedes literature, Mercedes-Benz Touring Guarantee documentation and other original operating/reference material.
There is even surviving Speeds of Blackpool literature, described as “Exclusively Mercedes Benz Agents”, which complements the early Speeds stamps in the service book and adds a lovely piece of period provenance.
The paperwork file also contains numerous later invoices and receipts for maintenance and repair work. This is therefore much more than a car with a handful of service stamps; there is a substantial physical history file accompanying it.
Service history
The original service book starts before the car was even registered.
It carries a Speeds of Blackpool pre-delivery inspection stamp dated 21 May 1990, with the car being first registered two days later on 23 May.
The running-in inspection followed on 20 June 1990 at 1,227 miles.
The photographed service-book entries then show:
21 May 1990 – Pre-delivery inspection – Speeds of Blackpool
20 June 1990 – 1,227 miles – Speeds of Blackpool
22 April 1991 – 6,425 miles – Speeds of Blackpool
24 July 1992 – 12,741 miles – Speeds of Blackpool
24 May 1993 – 16,845 miles – Speeds of Blackpool
1994 – approx. 22,206 miles – new battery noted in service book
7 June 1995 – 23,811 miles – R.D. & A.M. Taylor, Clifton, Preston
4 June 1996 – 25,424 miles – R.D. & A.M. Taylor
28 May 1998 – 28,083 miles – R.D. & A.M. Taylor
25 June 2009 – 42,380 miles – Prestige Auto Services, Mercedes-Benz Specialist
24 July 2019 – 47,399 miles – Prestige Auto Services, Mercedes-Benz Specialist
22 November 2021 – 48,197 miles – Prestige Auto Services, Mercedes-Benz Specialist
2 March 2023 – 49,379 miles – Prestige Auto Services, Mercedes-Benz Specialist
1 March 2024 – 49,933 miles – Prestige Auto Services, Mercedes-Benz Specialist
The 2019 service entry also appears to record engine service plus gearbox oil and filter, which is particularly useful maintenance to have documented on an automatic W124.
The mileage progression throughout the book is notable. It starts at just 1,227 miles in June 1990 and reaches only 49,933 miles by March 2024, giving the car a substantial documentary trail spanning more than three decades.
Early Mercedes-Benz provenance
The early history is particularly appealing.
The car received its pre-delivery inspection at Speeds of Blackpool on 21 May 1990 and was registered on 23 May. The first several services continued to be stamped by Speeds.
Original Speeds of Blackpool Mercedes-Benz material has also survived with the car.
This sort of period documentation is increasingly difficult to find with a 36-year-old W124 and helps give the car a history that can actually be followed rather than simply relying on a claimed mileage.
Later specialist care
Following the early Mercedes-Benz history, the service book shows maintenance by R.D. & A.M. Taylor of Clifton, Preston, followed in later years by Prestige Auto Services, Mercedes-Benz Specialist.
The Prestige entries extend right through to March 2024, showing that the service book was still being used more than three decades after the car was supplied.
The accompanying folder contains further invoices and receipts, adding considerably to the documentary history.
Original book pack and documentation
The car comes with an unusually pleasing collection of period Mercedes-Benz material, including:
Original Mercedes-Benz service book
Mercedes-Benz UK Sales/Service literature
Mercedes-Benz Touring Guarantee documentation
European Mercedes-Benz literature
Original operating/reference literature
Period Speeds of Blackpool Mercedes-Benz agent literature
Later maintenance invoices and receipts
V5C registration document
There is also period Blaupunkt Atlanta SQR 47 operating literature amongst the paperwork.
For collectors and enthusiasts, retaining this sort of original material is a significant bonus. It is the kind of documentation that is very difficult to recreate once separated from a car.
Why this W124 stands out
The appeal here isn’t simply that this is an old Mercedes with a low odometer reading.
It is the combination of a desirable petrol 230E automatic, very modest recorded mileage and, most importantly, a substantial documentary trail beginning when the car was new.
The service book starts with the pre-delivery inspection, records the 1,227-mile running-in inspection and continues through the 1990s and into specialist maintenance in 2009, 2019, 2021, 2023 and 2024.
With only four former keepers recorded on the V5C, its original books, period supplying-agent material and a substantial collection of invoices, it presents as a W124 with a particularly interesting provenance.
For anyone specifically searching for a Mercedes W124 230E with genuine period documentation rather than a car whose early history has been lost, this one deserves serious consideration.
