Offered is an oval Civil War-era style infantry officer’s insignia featuring an elaborate hunting horn worked in gold metallic bullion on a dark wool ground. The horn is exceptionally detailed with coiled bullion construction, twisted-wire outlines, embroidered suspension cords, tassels, and decorative fittings, all surrounded by a fine metallic bullion border. The reverse retains a period-style paper dealer label reading “Schuyler, Hartley & Graham,” the well-known New York military goods firm. The piece measures approximately 3 1/2 inches across based on the photograph. The bullion exhibits extensive age toning, oxidation, fading, and areas of greenish discoloration, while the wool ground shows wear, fading, surface loss, and scattered deterioration consistent with considerable age. In our opinion, the construction, materials, workmanship, hunting-horn device, and Schuyler, Hartley & Graham label are consistent with a Civil War-period infantry officer’s embroidered hat or uniform insignia. An attractive and highly detailed example with strong visual character and a desirable military outfitter label.
