Portrait Miniature of a Young Lady, Revolution Period, c. 1790–1795

Dear collectors, Noblesse-Collection is pleased to propose you this attractive late 18th-century 
French portrait miniature depicting a young lady, dating from circa 1790–1795, during the period of 
the French Revolution.

The sitter is portrayed bust-length against a subdued grey background, wearing a pale blue dress 
with a softly arranged white fichu covering the neckline.

Her chestnut hair is worn naturally, parted at the front and falling in loose curls around the shoulders. 
She wears an elaborate white lace bonnet decorated with a darker ribbon, a particularly charming 
detail of her late 18th-century costume.

The combination of the natural, unpowdered hairstyle, soft fichu, relatively simple dress and lace 
bonnet is characteristic of the profound changes in female fashion taking place around the time of 
the French Revolution and supports a dating to circa 1790–1795.

The reverse bears an old handwritten inscription identifying the sitter as “Charlotte Corday.” 
This inscription is later than the miniature and should therefore be regarded as a later traditional 
attribution only. There is no documentary evidence accompanying the portrait that would allow 
the sitter to be securely identified as Charlotte Corday (1768–1793).

Nevertheless, the proposed identification is chronologically possible, since both the apparent age of 
the sitter and the dating of her costume are compatible with the period in which Charlotte Corday lived. 
The inscription therefore represents an interesting part of the history and provenance of the miniature, 
while the attribution itself must remain unconfirmed.

Condition: Antique condition with expected age-related wear and surface irregularities. Minor wear, 
marks and small areas of surface disturbance are visible, particularly around the outer edges of the 
miniature. The handwritten identification “Charlotte Corday” on the reverse is a later inscription and 
is not contemporary with the portrait. Please examine the photographs carefully as they form an 
integral part of the condition description.

An intriguing late 18th-century French portrait miniature, particularly interesting for its 
Revolutionary-period costume and its later traditional identification of the sitter as 
Charlotte Corday. This attribution remains undocumented and is therefore offered only 
as a historical possibility rather than a confirmed identification.
