French portrait miniature depicting a lady, dating from circa 1780–1785, during the reign of Louis XVI.
The sitter is portrayed bust-length against a warm brown background, wearing a blue dress and a
large white fichu arranged around the shoulders and neckline.
Her most distinctive feature is her elaborate powdered hairstyle, arranged high above the forehead
with considerable volume and terminating in symmetrical lateral curls. This fashionable coiffure is
highly characteristic of the early 1780s and, together with the sitter's costume, supports a dating to
circa 1780–1785, before the French Revolution.
Although the artistic execution is relatively modest, the miniature remains an attractive and highly
decorative example of French portraiture from the Louis XVI period. Its principal appeal lies in its
genuine 18th-century character, distinctive period hairstyle and costume.
