COLLECTIBLE ANTIQUE STONEBRIDGE FOLDING LAMP

 

I picked this folding lantern up at a flea market back in the 1970’s.  All I can tell you about its history is what I learned in researching it and talking to people.

 

The Stonebridge Folding Lantern was patented between 1900 and 1908.  It is designed to fold flat for ease of transportation.  It is light-weight and was used by the armed forces during World War I. After the war, it was often used by outdoor enthusiasts and the Boy Scouts where it appears in their catalogues.

 

·       I believe this version of the lantern is made out of galvanized steel.

·       It has three mica (isinglass) windows

·       There is a rack inside on the bottom to hold a candle

·       It has a fold down handle at the top, and a peaked “roof.”

·       On the “roof”, on both sides is stamped “STONEBRIDGE FOLDING LANTERN PAT’D” and what I think is the date Nov 1908 and something more, but it is not obvious and difficult to make out.  Below that is the Stonebridge Co. name and N.Y.C and “ MADE IN U.S.A.”

·       When it is not folded, but with the handle folded down, the lantern measures about 4 ¼” x 4 ¼” x 10”.  The wire handle is about 3 ½” x 4 ½”.

·       I have folded and unfolded the lantern (as seen in the photos) so I know it still “works.” 

·       There are complete panels of mica in all 3 windows with just hints of cracking except on the front window which, while still intact, has started to come out of the bottom. (Please see photos.)  Considering its age and how it must have been used, it is in really nice condition.
