MCMXC a.D. was the album that introduced Enigma, Michael Cretu’s studio project, and established one of the most recognizable sounds of the early 1990s by combining electronic production, atmospheric textures, sensual vocals and Gregorian chant.
What makes The Complete Album DVD particularly interesting is that it is not simply a collection of conventional music videos. The original album itself is presented as a continuous audiovisual work, making this release an early example of the type of visual-album presentation that would become much more common years later.
The DVD substantially expands the package with the four principal videos associated with the album—“Sadeness,” “Mea Culpa,” “Principles of Lust” and “The Rivers of Belief”—as well as an Enigma interview. European documentation confirms the same complete-album program and bonus-video configuration.
From an audio-collector standpoint, one of its strongest features is the presence of both Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS Digital Surround Sound, in addition to PCM stereo. The album material was specifically presented in multichannel form on the DVD, providing a substantially different listening experience from the original stereo CD.
This particular copy should also be distinguished from the more commonly documented European edition. The European 2003 release uses catalog 7243 4 90790 9 0 and barcode 724349079090, whereas the copy shown here carries the U.S. catalog 72434-90791-9-9 and UPC 724349079199. AllMusic identifies 90791 as the subsequent 2004 Virgin/EMI DVD edition, matching this copy.
