4. 蛙 —7 型地对地战术火箭
4. FROG‑7 surface‑to‑surface tactical rocket
Note: “蛙‑7” is the standard 1970s Chinese translation for the NATO reporting‑name FROG‑7 (Free‑Rocket‑Over‑Ground). This is an unguided tactical rocket.
The FROG‑7 (9M21) was an unguided, short‑range tactical rocket developed for Soviet ground forces, succeeding earlier FROG series rocket systems. Design work proceeded during the early‑1960s to give divisional‑level formations a mobile nuclear‑capable fire‑support asset. It was fired from a wheeled transporter‑erector‑launcher vehicle, carried conventional high‑explosive, chemical or nuclear warheads, and lacked inertial guidance, relying entirely on ballistic trajectory. The FROG‑7 reached initial operational service with Soviet units around 1965.
FROG‑7 equipped Soviet army‑level rocket brigades, intended to strike front‑line troop concentrations, artillery positions, supply dumps and forward command posts. It was heavily exported to Warsaw‑Pact allies and many Soviet‑friendly client states across the globe. It remained a standard Soviet theatre weapon through the 1970s, the period of this July 1978 wall chart. Soviet‑service FROG‑7 systems were withdrawn under the INF treaty, while numerous exported examples continued to see operational use in multiple regional conflicts long after the Cold‑War.
