"In his second year, he continues to run wild as a two-way player. Last season he made a striking debut starting in the March 29 opener against Seibu, going 2-for-4 with his first career hit and RBI. On July 10 against Rakuten he hit his first home run. On the mound, he earned his first pro win in his second start, on June 1 against Chunichi. He was the 11th player — and the first since Yutaka Enatsu (Hanshin) in 1967 — to record both a win and a home run as a high-school-graduate rookie. He was the 4th high-school-grad rookie to appear as both pitcher and fielder, and in the June 18 game against Hiroshima he became the first ever to start as the No. 5 hitter and pitcher, taking the mound while batting in the cleanup portion of the order. On defense in the outfield, he recorded 7 assists — the most by a high-school-graduate rookie in the draft era — showcasing his strong arm."
