The 16800 was the first model to include a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal and an increased depth resistance of up to 1,000 feet. Featuring a classic dive watch design, this reference is equipped with a 40mm Oyster case outfitted with a 60-minute timing bezel, matching black dial with luminous hour markers and sweeping "Mercedes" hands, and a waterproof screw-down crown. The bezel is a focal point of this timepiece with a unidirectional design that will allow the diver to measure increments of time while in the water, safely and reliably. That feature, paired with the increased water resistance and highly functional dial, creates the ideal tool-watch for underwater adventures. Rolex pairs the case with a stainless steel Oyster bracelet with flat links and a folding Oysterlock clasp for a secure and comfortable fit that is second to none.
The Rolex 16800 is a transitional Submariner, bridging the line's vintage feel and a more modern date format. This 1987 example pairs a 40mm stainless steel case and matching bracelet with a black dial. The automatic movement and date display keep it practical without losing the direct, functional character that defines the Submariner. At 12.6mm thick, it still wears with the compact, balanced proportions.
