A nice Conn Smythe signed newspaper article from 1976. The photo is signed "Conn Smythe" in the article headline. I believe this to be an authentic, hand signed signature of Conn Smythe (please note the signature has not been authenticated). The article describes Mr. Smythe's fundraising activities with the Ontario Community Centre for the Deaf.
The newspaper article measures 6" x 7". The condition of the newspaper article is very good with toning due to age. Please see photos to confirm condition. In 1927 Conn Smythe purchased the Toronto St. Pats and changed their name to the Maple Leafs. He turned the struggling franchise around and led them to their first of 11 Stanley Cup championships in 1931-32. From that year until 1962 when Smythe retired, the Toronto Maple Leafs appeared in 16 Stanley Cup finals, and won in 1932, 1942, 1945, 1947-1949, 1951 and 1962. He was instrumental in the acquisitions of Hall of Famers King Clancy, Joe Primeau, Ace Bailey, Turk Broda, Ted Kennedy, Johnny Bower and Tim Horton, among many others.
The NHL named the Stanley Cup playoffs Most Valuable Players award the Conn Smythe Trophy in 1964. Conn Smythe was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1958 in the Builder category. An avid horse racing enthusiast, owner and breeder, Mr. Smythe was also inducted into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame.
