This is a pre-owned Japanese maki-e lacquer tea caddy for powdered matcha, offered as a single piece together with its inscribed wooden box.
This is Wajima-nuri, the lacquer of Wajima in Ishikawa. It is the best known lacquer name in Japan and the ground is built up in many layers, which is what gives the surface its depth.
Irises run across the black ground in gold. The drawing is loose rather than stiff, so the flowers read as growing rather than as a repeated pattern.
This is an onatsume, the larger size, which is the one that shows well on a stand at a tea gathering.
It comes with its inscribed wooden box and the cloth wrapper that belongs with it.
The wooden box is brush-inscribed 金彩菖蒲蒔硡 and carries the name θ—€εŽŸζ˜δΊŒ.
Size: About 7.4cm across and 7.6cm tall (2.9 x 3.0 in)
Maki-e is the Japanese technique of drawing a design in wet lacquer and then dusting it with metal powder so that the picture stands slightly above the surface. A natsume is the lidded container that holds powdered matcha for the thin-tea part of a Japanese tea gathering.

The wooden box carries a brush inscription and often a seal. I show what is written on it in the photographs, but I am not able to authenticate a signature, so please treat the name as information written on the box rather than as a guarantee.
I do not claim an exact date for this piece. It is a twentieth-century studio piece rather than an antique.
This is lacquer over a wooden core. Small differences in gloss, tone and in the thickness of the metal powder are part of hand work and are not treated as faults.
Colour can look slightly different depending on lighting and screen.
Only the pieces listed above are included. The tea bowl, the scoop, the whisk and any other utensil used in a photograph to show scale are not included.
I am an individual seller, not a certifying body, so I do not provide an appraisal document.
