This is a vintage 9ct gold novelty brooch modelled as a four-string banjo, its pot set with mother-of-pearl on both faces and strung with fine gold wire over a raised bridge. Hallmarked Birmingham 1931, it belongs to the banjolele craze that George Formby carried into every British music hall. The double-sided shell head marks this as a better-made example of the tiny wearable instruments novelty jewellers produced for that enthusiasm.
