Forbidden Planet is the 1956 novelization of the landmark MGM science-fiction film, one of the most important early big-budget space adventures and a movie that helped shape the look and tone of screen science fiction for decades to come. Set on the distant planet Altair IV, the story follows Commander Adams and his crew as they investigate the fate of a lost expedition and encounter Dr. Morbius, his daughter Altaira, the mysterious technology of the vanished Krell civilization, and the unforgettable Robby the Robot.
This is the original 1956 Bantam Books paperback edition, number A1443, with the original 35¢ cover price and the classic illustrated cover featuring Robby the Robot. For collectors of vintage science fiction and movie tie-in paperbacks, this is the edition that directly connects the novelization to the original theatrical release rather than a later reprint.
The film itself remains famous for its groundbreaking electronic score, futuristic production design, Robby the Robot, and the idea of an advanced civilization destroyed by the darker side of its own subconscious. Those same elements are carried into Stuart's novelization, making the paperback much more than a generic adaptation of an old movie.
This is a generally very nice used copy with a tight, solid binding and no loose pages. There is an ever-so-slight lean to the spine and very minor shelfwear to the covers, with one light small corner crease at both the top and bottom. A small piece of clear tape runs along the bottom of the spine from the front cover to the back. The spine is not split and the tape appears to have been added as reinforcement at some point, although it was not done by me. Internally the pages are crisp, clean and only lightly tanned with age. All in all it is a very nice copy, Enjoy.
