On April 25, 1865, a massive funeral procession for President Abraham Lincoln took place in New York City before his remains were transported by train to Albany.
New York City Procession Details
- Participants: Around 60,000 people marched in the procession, while an estimated 120,000 mourners had filed past his casket while he lay in state at City Hall.
- Route: The solemn cortege moved up Broadway toward Union Square and 14th Street, surrounded by massive crowds standing up to 15 people deep.
- Famous Spectators: A young, future president—6-year-old Theodore Roosevelt—and his brother Elliott watched the procession from a second-floor window of their grandfather's mansion on Broadway.
- Departure: Later that day, the funeral train departed New York City to continue its northward journey toward Albany and eventually back to Springfield, Illinois.
