In August 1863, Union Major General William S. Rosecrans launched a campaign to capture the vital railroad hub of Chattanooga, Tennessee, culminating in the Second Battle of Chattanooga on August 21.

Key Events of August 1863

  • Campaign Launch: On August 16, Rosecrans led the Army of the Cumberland forward, using clever feints to trick Confederate General Braxton Bragg into expecting a direct assault from the northeast.
  • The Bombardment: On August 21, Union artillery under Col. John T. Wilder shelled Chattanooga from across the Tennessee River, hitting a church service, sinking two steamboats, and forcing Bragg's forces into confusion.
  • The Decoy Effect: The periodic shelling kept Confederate attention fixed on the northeast while the main Union army successfully crossed the Tennessee River further west and south.
  • Evacuation: Bragg ultimately realized the scale of the flanking maneuver and abandoned Chattanooga in early September, setting the stage for the dramatic Chickamauga and Chattanooga campaigns.

The newspaper usually contained 8 pages of text and 8 pages of gorgeous woodcut engravings, highly prized today for their  detailed contemporary illustrations of events and places. The engravings are generally in 3 sizes: double page (DP - 21" X 16"), Full page (FP- 16" x 11") , and half page (HP- 10" x 8").
