Alma Ranchera has particular historical importance because it became Rocío Dúrcal’s final studio album, released in 2004, less than two years before her death. The album consists primarily of interpretations of classic Mexican compositions by songwriters including José Alfredo Jiménez, Cuco Sánchez, Tomás Méndez, José Ángel Espinoza “Ferrusquilla” and Rubén Fuentes. The closing track, “Vete a Volar,” was notable as a new composition rather than another established ranchera standard.
The recording received substantial industry recognition. Alma Ranchera was nominated at the 47th Annual Grammy Awards in the regional Mexican category and was also nominated for Best Ranchero Album at the 6th Annual Latin Grammy Awards.
