This commemorative stamp was issued in 1938 to mark the 300th anniversary of the landing of Swedish and Finnish settlers in what is now Wilmington, Delaware. These early colonists founded New Sweden, one of the earliest European settlements in North America, and their influence can still be seen today in the region’s culture, architecture, and history.
The stamp’s purple engraved design reflects the classic style of 1930s U.S. commemoratives, highlighting the moment of arrival and the significance of these communities in early American development.
