Combat Records
The Harpoon's combat records come mainly from two U.S. Navy operations in the 1980s:
1986, Gulf of Sidra Conflict: This was the Harpoon's first use in combat. On March 24, 1986, a U.S. Navy A-6E Intruder attack aircraft launched an AGM-84A air-launched Harpoon, sinking a Libyan Navy Warrior-IIG‑class missile boat that had approached the U.S. fleet. During the same conflict, the U.S. cruiser USS Yorktown also used surface-launched RGM-84C Harpoons to heavily damage a Libyan patrol craft.
1988, Persian Gulf (Operation Praying Mantis): During the "Tanker War" phase of the Iran–Iraq War, the U.S. Navy launched Operation Praying Mantis on April 18, 1988, to strike Iranian naval forces. In this action, U.S. forces used Harpoon missiles to sink the Iranian frigate IRIS Sahand.
Major Exercises and Capability Demonstrations
Beyond actual combat, the Harpoon has demonstrated its versatility and multi-platform adaptability through several key exercises:
2014 RIMPAC Exercise: The U.S. Navy's P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft conducted its first live-fire test of the AGM-84D Harpoon during this exercise. This marked the successful integration of the Harpoon with the new-generation P-8A, showcasing its long-range anti-ship capabilities.
2026 Exercise Valiant Shield: During the multinational exercise held near Guam in June 2026, the Royal New Zealand Air Force fired an AGM-84 Harpoon for the first time from its P-8A aircraft, successfully hitting the target vessel—the former U.S. Navy amphibious transport dock USS Juneau. This confirmed the missile's interoperability across different national platforms.
Arms Sales and Extended Use
Through foreign military sales and variant developments, the Harpoon has also had impacts beyond U.S. service:
Military Assistance to Ukraine and Taiwan: Following the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine conflict in 2022, the U.S. announced it would provide coastal-defense Harpoon systems to Ukraine. Separately, reports in 2023 indicated U.S. plans to sell 400 coastal-defense Harpoon missiles to Taiwan, and in 2025, the U.S. approved maintenance and overhaul services for Taiwan's existing Harpoon inventory.
Combat Use of Derived Variants: During the Gulf War (1991), the land-attack derivative AGM-84E SLAM (Standoff Land Attack Missile), which evolved from the Harpoon airframe, was used in combat and created a classic case: two missiles successively struck the same location on an Iraqi power station, entering through a hole blasted by the first to destroy the target.
