Charles Curtis

Charles Curtis autographed typed letter (TLS), dated July 8, 1929, on "The Vice President's Chamber, Washington" letterhead. Addressed to "Cahill," Curtis writes that he is again taking up the case of Benedict Stone with Secretary Mellon, referring to Andrew W. Mellon, then serving as Secretary of the Treasury. The letter closes "Very truly yours," followed by Curtis's autograph.

The lower portion of the sheet has been trimmed, with an uneven lower edge. Expected mailing fold, toning, and light age wear.

Charles Curtis (1860-1936) served as Vice President of the United States under President Herbert Hoover from 1929 to 1933. A longtime Kansas politician who previously served in both the U.S. House and Senate, Curtis became Senate Majority Leader before joining Hoover's presidential ticket. A member of the Kaw Nation through his mother, Curtis was the first person with acknowledged Native American ancestry and the first enrolled member of a Native American tribe to serve as Vice President of the United States.
