This Japanese wooden box appears to be 100 or so years old. The inset wooden writing at the upper right on the lid says "Shochuu" ("Midsummer"), which is pretty surely short for "Shochuu Mimai", a midsummer gift. We can't figure out the writing just to the left of that, but it probably says what was in the box (probably something sweet to eat). The rest is an address in Maebashi City, and the name of the shop it came from, "Ogo Shop".

There is general wear and dustiness, with some chipping away and fractures in the veneer, but there is no other significant structural damage.
