Antique Brass Nested Cup Weights Set Apothecary Scale Nuremberg Type 19th C

Antique European brass nested cup weight set for use with a traditional balance scale.

An interesting early weighing instrument consisting of a cylindrical brass master container with hinged lid and five graduated cup-shaped weights which nest inside one another for compact storage.

These traditional nested weight systems were historically used by merchants, apothecaries, pharmacists, traders and money changers for weighing goods, medicines, coins and other valuable materials.

The outer container features a hinged lid, locking mechanism, turned finial and decorative incised / rope-pattern borders.

Approximate height of closed container: 6.3–6.5 cm

The exact weight standard, country of manufacture and date have not been confirmed. The set appears to belong to the traditional Continental European / Nuremberg-type family of nested cup weights.

Condition:

Authentic used antique condition with substantial age-related patina, surface wear, scratches, oxidation, discoloration and small areas of green verdigris. The base shows considerable historic wear.
