A fascinating and increasingly unusual MPP (Micro Precision Products) British military stereoscopic aerial photograph viewer, dating from approximately the 1950s to early 1960s and firmly within the Cold War period.
The instrument is clearly military marked:

with the distinctive British Broad Arrow government property mark.
This specialised optical instrument was designed for the stereoscopic examination of overlapping aerial photographs. By presenting slightly different aerial images to the left and right eyes, the viewer allows terrain and structures to be perceived with three-dimensional depth — an important technique in aerial photographic interpretation, surveying, mapping and military reconnaissance.
The two optical channels are individually identified L and R, with the substantial prismatic optical assemblies mounted above four adjustable support legs.
This is a particularly pleasing surviving example considering its approximately 70 years of age.
All four adjustable legs have been checked and operate correctly.
The optics are very clean for their age, and both left and right optical paths provide clear views.
Naturally, these are vintage optical components approaching seven decades old and should not be expected to be optically perfect. Minor age-related dust, marks or imperfections may therefore be present, but overall the optics have survived remarkably well.
The metal body and fittings remain in good vintage condition with expected signs of age, handling and storage. Importantly, the original military identification and Broad Arrow marking remain clearly visible.
Please study the photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition description.
The viewer is accompanied by its original fitted carrying/storage case, adding considerably to its character and completeness as a surviving military optical instrument.
The exterior shows normal age and storage wear.
The original red internal lining/padding has significantly deteriorated with age, as clearly shown in the photographs. This is cosmetic deterioration to the case interior and is mentioned specifically so there are no surprises for the buyer.
No attempt has been made to extensively restore or modernise the case.
Stereoscopic aerial photography uses two photographs of the same landscape taken from slightly different positions.
When correctly positioned beneath a viewer such as this, one photograph is presented to each eye. The resulting stereoscopic effect allows the observer to perceive height and depth within the landscape rather than simply examining a flat photograph.
Terrain, buildings, embankments, excavations and other features can consequently become considerably easier to interpret.
During the Cold War era, aerial photography and photographic interpretation became extremely important military disciplines, making surviving purpose-built British military optical equipment from this period particularly interesting.
Please note: while this is military-marked equipment of the correct type and period for aerial photographic interpretation, no claim is made regarding the particular units, locations or operations in which this individual instrument may have been used.
A very appealing combination of:
This isn't simply a pair of vintage binoculars — it is a specialised piece of British military photographic interpretation equipment from one of the defining technological periods of the 20th century.
Stereoscopic aerial photographs can reveal information that can be surprisingly difficult to recognise in a conventional two-dimensional image.
Because the human brain interprets the slightly different left and right images as depth, an experienced photographic interpreter could examine the shape, height and relationship of features within the landscape in three dimensions.
The technique became an important tool in military aerial reconnaissance and remained highly relevant throughout the Cold War despite rapid advances in aircraft, cameras and intelligence technology.
